Iowa State’s Robin Bera arrested by campus police

Iowa State sophomore cross country athlete Robin Kwemoi Bera was arrested at approximately 9 p.m. on Oct. 22 by the Iowa State Police Department.

Public records show a warrant was issued for Bera’s arrest on Sept. 30 in relation to an incident that took place on Sept. 17.

Track & XC News received the complaint and affidavit through a public records request. The report states a witness saw Bera involved in a “property damage only accident” and made eye contact with Bera as he drove away from the scene.

Bera was arrested outside the Bergstrom football complex on Oct. 22. Public records show Bera was charged with “leaving scene of traffic accident — vehicle damage only.”

The following day, teammate Joash Ruto posted a $300 bond and Bera was released into his custody, according to public records. Bera’s first court appearance is set for 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 3.

According to public records, Bera owes $210.25 in fines in relation to the Sept. 17 incident.

Bera’s legal troubles date back to July 28 when he was also charged with “failure to provide proof of financial liability — accident.” He paid $1,167.63 in fines and was not arrested in that case.

The Oct. 22 arrest happened four days before Iowa State confirmed multiple athletes on the men’s team had been suspended for the season. Iowa State did not provide names of athletes who were suspended.

This season, Bera has competed in one meet, placing third for Iowa State and seventh overall at the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 26. He is also listed on the start list for the Big 12 Championships on Friday.

Iowa State men’s cross country has ranked No. 1 all season in the USTFCCCA coaches poll.

Iowa State senior associate athletic director Nick Joos stated that any discipline for the arrest would be handled internally. Joos did not comment on the arrest’s relation to recent team suspensions.
